QUALIFYING ROUND 1

Andrew Hall led the opening round of PBA division qualifying. The Massachusetts native shot 1,455 (+255) for his six games on the 42-foot oil pattern.

"I had a chance to practice on the pattern a few times before the event on a similar lane surface, and I kind of had an idea of how they'd play," Hall said. "I was actually able to throw the urethane ball about a game and a half longer than I expected to. Once we were able to move in with reactive balls and cleaner pieces, I was able to just bend it around a spot and be slow."

Hall was one of 12 players who earned a 2025 PBA Tour exemption at August's PBA Tour Trials. He said his confidence has undeniably grown since that performance.

"I love the fact that I can just go into a tournament now and really feel like I'm a genuine threat to do something," Hall said. "I spent the last few years learning and gaining experience and now I feel like I can really get after it. The exemption really does help loosen up the swing."

The top 24 players after 18 games of qualifying will advance to elimination match play. The top eight qualifiers will earn a one-round bye.

In the PBA50 division, Randy Weiss paced the field with 1,372 (+172) for his six games on the 42-foot oil pattern. Closing games of 247 and 269 propelled the 2024 PBA50 Tour Rookie of the Year to a 50-pin lead.

Weiss said he moved into the inside part of the lane once transition hit and make good shots, which is his goal going into any event.

"(My goal) is the same as it always is: Just make good shots, take it one shot at a time and try to be loose and relaxed," Weiss said. "I try not to let my mind get out of the place it needs to be."

"The tournament is not even a third of the way over, so I've got to get right back to work and really pay attention to what the guys do different this block," Weiss continued. "I will try to keep my mind open and keep making one good shot at a time."

The top 12 players after 18 games of qualifying will advance to elimination match play. The top four qualifiers will earn a one-round bye.
