Peter Hakim, a part-time professional bowler, turned his favorite lanes and hometown crowd to his advantage to win the $125,000 Long Island Open. He defeated top-seeded Storm DeVincent, 216-206, to win his first Professional Bowlers Association title, a check for $18,000 and a spot in the $250,000 Firestone Tournament of Champions. For DeVincent, the defeat was frustrating. He had bowled superbly all week, and he and Hakim were joined in the finals by another part-time pro, Doug Wallace, Ron Palombi Jr. and defending champion Mike Aulby. In the Saturday finals, Aulby started a run at successfully defending his title by defeating Wallace, 211-207. Third-seeded Hakim began his first career championship round appearance with eight strikes and envisioned the $100,000 True Value Award for a perfect game for a time. Despite Aulby's closing five-bagger and 246, Hakim's 267 stood up. He then got into the title game with a thrilling 232-223 win over Palombi.
