Carmen Salvino, always the actor, had the lead part in the New Jersey Open drama which featured a Frank Merriwell finish. The top four "heavies" going into the last game of the tournament were only 18 pins apart. Billy Golembiewski was in front, Salvino second, Les Schissler third and Jack Biondolillo fourth. And in the last frame, Salvino needed a double to beat Billy G and a Schissler strike would have beaten them both. As it turned out, Salvino got his big strike on a Brooklyn hit and Schissler left four pins to give Salvino his sixth PBA championship. Carmen's margin of victory was but nine pins over Schissler. The G-Man finished 53 pins off the pace. This was Salvino's first win in over a year and he commented: "When you've been in the winner's circle a few times and then have a long dry spell, you get frustrated. And, believe me, I was one of the most frustrated people ever going into this tournament."
